8 Catalan Hospitals Implement Electronic Prescriptions

Historia clínica electrónica (HCE)

Hospitals managed by the Institut Català de la Salut (Catalan Healthcare Institute, ICS) now have an IT tool integrated with primary care and pharmacies that allows specialists to access and interact with each of their patients’ unique medication plan. This shared tool allows family doctors, paediatricians, nurses, specialists, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals involved in patient care to share their unique medication plan and make modifications for the first time. All this comes with the necessary safety guarantees that ensure confidentiality and proper use of the information. The electronic prescription module is integrated with the patient’s primary care and hospital electronic health record and gives real time information about the patient’s overall medical plan, detects possible interactions or incompatibilities between medications, makes it possible to modify or withdraw a prescription and provides a messaging service between all the healthcare professionals involved. Currently the 8 Catalan hospitals run directly by ICS have already implemented the module and Vall d’Hebron was the first to complete implementation of the module for all its services.
