Colombia: The Law on the Unique Electronic Health Record Will Come Into Effect in 2013

In a year and a half, Unique Electronic Health Records will become obligatory in Colombia. Law 1438 of 2011, which reformed the Social Security System for Colombian healthcare, states that the Single Electronic Health Record will be obligatory by the 31st of December 2013.

It also establishes, in articles 62 and 64, with regard to Integrated Health Service Networks, that they will make electronic exchange of demographic, clinical and epidemiological information possible between different agents and components of the Healthcare System.

Furthermore, the regulations state that the identity of users of services will be verified via a consultation procedure in the databases of the National Registry of the Civil State (Article 112).

How suppliers are preparing

This is without doubt a great opportunity for the sector, as better performing IT solutions are required. Suppliers are making great efforts to optimize their range of solutions.
