Technology That Registers Human Emotions

Generales

eMotion is an Israeli company whose vision is to create a connection between our emotions and computer-based systems. It was founded by a group of professionals to revolutionize the man-machine interface. The technology is based on extensive bio-medical research, focusing on the influence of the media on emotions, improved sensor capacity and algorithms for the detection of emotions by artificial means. “Our experience is important for the development of the games and high-quality games markets, designing electronic systems, development and production (standard and military), bio-feedback sensors and even therapy, as well as the semiconductor industry and development of high-level algorithms.”

eMotion has already developed several prototypes and carried out concept tests and demonstrations to show the viability of the technology. The developments that have already been patented are compatible with every games console and can be adapted to all games engines in a Plug & Play system.

The prototype device is a comfortable and easy to wear bracelet that records signals which are then interpreted and transmitted to another piece of equipment, which could be a games console or another type of equipment.

The company’s intention is to change the way in which “the game” interacts with the player (and not vice-versa) adapting the game itself to how the player feels; their feelings, their humor, and emotional states, allowing the game itself to adapt to the player’s state, modifying its difficulty and other parameters.

Large games companies such as Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are locked in an ongoing struggle, with each investing billions in an effort to make the player feel as though they are part of the game.

eMotion is developing a system that measures the parameters of the player’s biofeedback, analyzing their emotional state so that the game can register that player’s level of immersion. The game is then aware of the player’s state and adjusts accordingly.

This technology, which is currently designed for games, could get even more impressive if we consider other applications, for instance in hospitals where doctors could, in addition to carrying out clinical exams, find out about patients’ mood pre- and post-operations.

It might also have military uses as the mood and stress levels of the troops are an important factor. The applications of this technology are promising as it would represent a great advance in man-machine interaction or even interaction between people as long as the privacy of the information obtained is not used maliciously.
