Uruguayan and Chilean Experiences in Health IT

The first day of the 7th Academic Conference on Health IT Systems at the Hospital Italiano, November 29th, had as its main focus “Experiences in Computerization of Healthcare Institutions”.

During his talk, Dr. Bernd Oberpaurla, a professional from Chile, referred to the management of clinical information and explained how the Alemana Clinic in Santiago approached the issue as well as that of medical development: “Among our challenges as a non-profit clinic founded in 1918 is to satisfy one hundred per cent of people’s healthcare needs and to provide information about general medical development which in many cases people are unaware of.” The clinic’s achievements between 2005 and 2012 included integration with the laboratory, creating integrated functions with the pathological anatomy, endoscopy, and ultrasound departments and adaptation of records. The institution also carried out a process of identification and definition of requirements and analysis of suppliers with clinical end users. Meanwhile, Jorge Gerez and J.C. Bacigalupo from the SEMM group in Uruguay dedicated to mobile emergency services and outpatient medical care, spoke about the redesign of IT systems and how a healthcare network functions in Uruguay. They consider it to be a fundamental part of the overall scheme to monitor the amount of care provided and centralize information at a single point: the patient. “This can be brought about through firm, solid and established objectives, by a functional and technical organization,” both professionals agreed.

Finally, the exhibitors Julio Leivas and Alvaro Vero at FEMI Digital, part of the Medical Federation of the Interior, which after 45 years of service continues to make progress and is now moving towards the incorporation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in its care service, stated that to integrate a national healthcare network, social inclusion, equality and human rights are essential components, in addition to improving the process and the consolidation of medical knowledge. The Uruguayan specialists introduced their latest advances such as the establishment of full web solutions with multi-platforms and multi-databases with significant levels of interoperability and connectivity.
