mHealth: A new application for people with bipolar disorders

Movilidad (mHealth)

Using the microphone, accelerometer and light sensors on a smartphone, the application MoodRhythms can monitor the social and sleep patterns of patients suffering from bipolar disorders.

The developers created this tool working with patients and medical staff, as it is designed to substitute usual treatments based on daily exercises printed out on paper.

In addition to giving the patient advice, the application can gather information. The data obtained is then used in a report on the patient’s daily activities, their mood and eating routines, which can help to identify the positive and negative aspects of their lives.

“In general terms, all monitoring and following of psychiatric patients usually presents good results and lowers the percentages of relapses,” said Doctor Carlos A. Vinacour, the President of the Bipolar Foundation of Argentina (FUPIBA).

In spite of the economic difficulties that would be a major obstacle in starting a project such as MoodRhythms, the President of FUPIBA emphasized that he wanted to develop a new tool for monitoring and following bipolar patients in Argentina.

The application, which is available for both iOS and Android platforms, can be downloaded from this site: https://www.moodrhythm.com/apk/
