The Alzira Model Cited as an Example to Other Regions

Gestión de Salud

“The administration of the hospitals of Torrevieja and Vinalopó is an example for other Spanish regions and other countries seeking to improve the health of their citizens apart from improving infrastructure,” said Verónica Sosa Delgado, a researcher at the University of California during her visit to the hospitals that follow the Alzira Model.

Partnership system

The Alzira Model has been functioning in several Spanish hospitals for over a decade. It is a public-private partnership system that is applied to public hospitals as an administrative concession.

The La Ribera Hospital was the first public Spanish hospital to be privately run. It is based around four central pillars: public property, public control, public finance and private administration.

Assesment of the Alzira Model

Doctor Sosa, a member of the Global Health Group (GHG), spoke to the heads of the Torrevieja and Vinalopó Hospitals and noted: “This partnership model has demonstrated its potential to provide healthcare services to the population with innovative schemes.”

Meanwhile, Doctor Elisa Tarazona, Director of Care Organization and Management at the Ribera Salud Group, stated: “In an environment like the present one, with the global crisis, new ways are being sought to provide sustainable healthcare systems and our model is highly valued internationally because it guarantees the quality of public services with increasing the cost to the citizen.”

The Purpose of the Visit

The information gathered by the researcher from the University of California will contribute to the development of a monograph study which will be used as a reference by other countries interested in undertaking a public-private healthcare project.

Sosa will develop – using international reports –  a study focusing on objectives relating to: quality of care, cost neutrality, equity of access, predictable public spending and the generation of a more efficient healthcare system.
