Murcia Tests a Web Portal to Improve Accessibility to Health Information

Using a web portal to be set up by the Department of Health and Social Policy of Murcia (Spain), citizens will be able to access their electronic health records, have virtual consults with their head doctors, get information about pharmaceutical products and check their appointment schedule.

“Users will be able to access the Patient Portal of the Murcian Health Service through their digital certificate or a code provided at the Health Center with complete confidentiality and security,” explained the Councilwoman for the Murcian Health Service, María Ángeles Palacios.

She announced that the IT tool will be available from the Electronic Access Point of the Murcian Health Service (SMS) and the Murciasalud Health Portal.

“Citizens will have access to their data: health card, reference hospital, doctor and head nurse, a brief summary of information about the current status of their health department and will be able to request an electronic appointment with their doctor,” Palacios said.

The virtual appointment process is still being tested at two healthcare centers in Area II – Cartagena Esta and Cartagena Casco Antiguo – but it will be implemented in January and throughout 2014 at the other healthcare establishments.

“We are not replacing physical consults, but providing another option for regular consults, a new form of contact and communication between the doctor and patient, with a focus on support,” the councilwoman said.

The Patient Portal at the Murcian Health Service is divided into four areas: applications, personal data, regional or internal news channel and primary care information – each patient’s health center (with an address, telephone number and location map) and the information about their head doctor and nurse with quick links to request an appointment or make an enquiry.

In the Applications Area, the user will have access to information about their pharmaceutical prescriptions: the prescription number, medication, package number and cost.

Furthermore, at the EHR link, citizens will find their personal and clinical information, analytical data – such as temperature and blood pressure – prior instructions, allergies, vaccinations, prescriptions, pending appointments and reports, all of which will be available on PDF and can be printed out.

Users will be able to authorize the Murcian Health Service to send alerts and notifications via text messages and emails. With this function they seek to open a new channel of communication between the service and patients.
