The Universidad Oberta de Cataluña (UOC) has held the seminar “Improving health via social networks, mHealth and mobile applications,” as part of the La Caixa Internationalization at Home Program whose objective is to invite international experts to speak at the institution.

The opening of the educational seminar, which took place on November 28 in the MediaTIC Building in Barcelona, Spain, was run by Doctor Francesc Saigí, the Director of the Telemedicine Program.

The conferences, which provide information about the challenges of research into healthcare social media and the supervision of elderly people via smartphones, were provided by the professors Luis Fernández-Luque and Panagiotis Bamidis.

Luque, a researcher in eHealth and medical informatics, moderated the talk “Trends in the future of healthcare social media for patients and professionals,” in which he offered an overall vision of the challenges of innovative applications that combine large amounts of data, games, social networks and the “Internet of things”.

Meanwhile, Bamidis, Assistant Professor of Medical Education IT, led the conference “Emotion, humor and the elderly: supervision, games and interventions through mobile phones.” He also provided information about the use of the Internet, mobile telephones, tablets and game technologies for the monitoring and treatment of the elderly.
