The Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad de Cartagena, Colombia, has won the international award for “Best Project in Healthcare Science, Technology and Innovation” for its project “Technological strategies for improving the administration of institutions and the network of healthcare services in the Department of Bolívar, Republic of Colombia.”

Doctor Fredy Pomares, who helped to make specialized medical care available in difficult to access regions in Bolívar, leads the telemedicine research team at the Universidad de Cartagena.

Using a computerized center that operates from the Hospital Universitario, the specialist doctors listen to and observe the patient – who is accompanied by a general practitioner throughout the process to help them follow the specialist’s instructions. They can thus take part in ultrasound scans, X-rays, simple surgery and provide diagnoses. In this regard, one of the most important links in the chain is Antari, an e-health solution that makes long distance communication possible.

“The Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad de Cartagena stands out in the Caribbean Region for its leadership in the implementation and use of information and communication technologies in the field of healthcare, enhancing the status of healthcare in the social value chain, based on health-friendly technologies that include the strengthening of the network of public and private health service providers,” said the award document published by the Spanish company GMV Soluciones Globales Internet, a specialist in the development of solutions using advanced and innovative technologies.
