The European Parliament has approved a report that calls for the European Union to regulate electronic healthcare systems: Electronic Health Records, telemedicine, portable patient monitoring devices, programming software in operating rooms and robotic surgery, among other aspects. The deputies propose protecting user data and ensuring interoperability in member countries.

The report, presented by Pilar Ayuso, a Deputy from the Spanish Partido Popular party, said that the generalization of electronic healthcare systems would improve the efficiency of services and reduce waiting times (for patients) and time spent on administration (for healthcare professionals).

“Currently, healthcare services in the EU are facing huge challenges due to the aging population, patient and professional mobility, and budget restrictions,” says Ayuso in a statement.

To achieve the implementation of the initiative, the European Parliament will provide specialized training for healthcare professionals.
