Mexico makes progress with telemedicine and satellite monitoring of diseases

Telemedicina

The Federal Government of Mexico, via the Mexican Space Agency (MSA) is developing a pilot telehealth program. The project, which seeks to expand its healthcare services to every point of the country, is being carried out in coordination with the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí.

The initiative forms part of the National Development Plan 2013-2018 and seeks to help the state sector make use of new technologies. It will thus include the satellite monitoring of diseases to increase the area covered and reach vulnerable populations.

The project is executed under a triple pillar scheme; coordinated work between industry, the government and academia.

Javier Mendieta Jiménez, Director General of the MSP, and Enrique Pacheco Cabrera, representative of the University, noted that space can help to find solutions and that technology is an important tool in preventative medicine.
