App Launched to empower anti-coagulant patients

Under the slogan “Monitor your INR, Control Your Life,” the Spanish Federation of Anti-Coagulant Associations (FEASAN) has released INRControl, an application that records the INR levels of anti-coagulant patients who receive anti-vitamin K.

Anti-coagulant patients require periodic check-ups to measure their INR (Internal Normalized Ratio), one of the indicators of blood clotting. This is not a curative treatment but is rather preventative in nature as it prevents and reduces the possibility of suffering from thrombosis or an embolism.

The app that FEASAN has released features a warning system that can record INR check-ups and compare them to historical records to provide a graph of the last 6 check-ups recorded. If a patient introduces an INR outside of their therapeutic range, the application activates a warning message.

“With this pioneering project in the field of anti-coagulant care, which was supported by a partnership between Bristol-MyersSquibb and Pfizer, we seek to get the patient actively involved in awareness and monitoring of their disease, so that they know the risks they run, the precautions they need to take and also the treatment they need to undergo,” said Luciano Arochena, the President of FEASAN.

He added: “There’s still a lot to do in terms of training and educating the patients, as many are still ignorant about their disease, its risks and consequences and the purpose and importance of INR monitoring.”

The application is available for iOS and Android and can be downloaded for free at www.controlatuanticoagulacion.org
