A New Hospital Simulation Center Opens in Catalonia

Innovación

With the objective of reducing human error in the healthcare environment, a simulation hospital has been opened to train professionals in the Catalan city of Igualada, Spain.

The hospital, called Centro de Innovación para la Simulación en Salud 4D Health (Innovation Center for 4D Healthcare), is equipped with settings that recreate the healthcare environment for any medical practice – be it a hospital, a public accident or a private home.

According to data from the World Health Organization, in Europe, 95 thousand people die every year due to human error. And the phenomenon leads to an economic cost to the Catalonian Administration of 128 million euros. This is why the 4DHealth project was implemented. It will be run on municipal funds under the leadership of Dr. Enric Macarulla.

How does it work?

Healthcare professionals train at 4D Health by carrying out simulations of situations that they might encounter in their daily work. They can thus practice and incorporate naturally and automatically all their knowledge, improving their abilities and skills to prevent unexpected situations and avoid the repetition of human errors. The system will thus be very useful for academic practices.

In addition, this simulated hospital has a pharmacy equipped with the latest technologies in control of dispensation as poor administration of medications constitutes one of the main causes of mistakes in the healthcare environment.

FACT: The building that houses the Innovation Center for Health Simulation was previously the Hospital de Igualada, so 4D Health started out with a real hospital infrastructure.
