The Universidad del Oeste de Santa Catarina Develops a New Health Information Technology Project

Telemedicina

The project, named the PACS Extended Medical Information Technology System, consists of a communications system and an archive of medical tomography and MRI images. It differs from the present system in that it makes use of the infrastructure of the national network to provide medical support and diagnosis functions, and is specially adapted to the characteristics of diseases prevalent in Brazil.

Professor Herculano, a Master of Computer Sciences, explained that the project took three months to prepare, and was selected for approval along with 40 others, receiving a subsidy of 50,000 dollars to develop a prototype of the program over six months. At the end of this period, a functioning prototype must be presented for analysis.

A team of Information Technology professionals is currently working on the prototype.

The project has a social aspect, as it will potentially lead to improvements in medical care in terms of faster implementation and reduced cost of medical examinations.

About the program

Working in collaboration with the CERTI Foundation, the Synapse Innovation Program is designed to be implemented in various stages during a process of mobilization in order to transform and apply good ideas generated in theses, dissertations, and scientific and technological works developed by students, researchers, and other professionals from different areas of UNOESC.

The program thus establishes a ‘community’ of businessmen to encourage discussion of innovative ideas. These ideas are then made available via the Synapse Portal, which is open to all participants, fostering the creation of a culture of business and cooperation between the different contributors to the innovation process.
