The organizers of CAIS 2011, the Second Argentine Congress on Information Technology and Healthcare, are currently arranging the final details for the event, which will take place in Córdoba between Wednesday, 31st of August and Friday, 2nd September, with more than 150 scientists, technicians, developers and businesspeople working in the field of health related information technology expected to attend.

Ehealth Reporter Latin America spoke to Dr. Alan D. March.  Dr. March is the ex-president of the Sociedad Argentina de Informática (Argentine Information Technology Society, SADIO), and works at Austral University Hospital. He will be co-chairing the event along with Héctor Repossi, a member of the Argentine Medical Information Technology Association (AAIM).

“The conferences are the key aspects of the conference,” said March. “The fact that the meeting is organized under the remit of Jornadas Anuales de la Sadio (SADIO Annual Events), means that it involves a wide range of subjects related to information technology and so can explore different interlinked aspects of the area in parallel. For example, conferences on agricultural information technology have implications for the management of epidemics, a subject which is also of interest to medical IT. Furthermore, the conference given by the team from the National Health Ministry will present the new systems the government is developing in this area in a joint session with a public IT conference,” he explained.

Presence from the Sector

For the second consecutive year, CAIS 2011 was made possible by coordinated work between six organizations; private Argentine associations with an interest in healthcare related information technology. These are the Asociación Argentina de Informática Médica (Argentine Medical Information Technology Society; AAIM), the Asociación Médica Argentina (Argentine Medical Association; AMA), the Grupo de Informática Médica de Buenos Aires (Medical Information Technology Group of Buenos Aires; GIBBA), HL7 Argentina, the Sociedad Argentina de Bioingeniería (Argentine Bioengineering Society; SABI) and the Sociedad Argentina de Informática (Argentine Information Technology Society; SADIO). It will once more be held in conjunction with Jornadas Argentinas de Informática (Argentinian Information Technology Events; JAIIO), which is this year celebrating its 40th Anniversary, in the city of Córdoba, at the Córdoba Regional Faculty of the National Technology University.

All these bodies are united in their goal to create a space which encourages knowledge-sharing between scientists, professionals, technicians, developers, administrators and businesspeople involved in applying information technologies to healthcare.

In the interests of simplicity, March suggests calling it “a meeting among friends”.
