ANVISA Extends the Period in Which Pharmacies Have To Provide Information on Sales of Antibiotics Electronically

Generales

The National Agency for Healthcare Monitoring has extended to the 16th of April 2013 the period pharmacies have available to meet the requirement to provide electronic information on antibiotics sales. The deadline had previously been set at the 13th of January.

Since 2010, antibiotics have only been available in pharmacies under prescription. ANVISA s decision to electronically monitor sales of antibiotics is part of its overall objective to monitor access to medicine more rigorously.

According to the agency, the plan is to monitor indiscriminate sales of medicines and the recurring practice of self-medication.
