Design Director
We believe great design is as important to our products as great code. That’s why we need a great designer as one of the earliest members of the team.
You have great aesthetic sensibility and user empathy. You love to harness the awesome power of computing by designing fun, engaging, powerful metaphors and interactions. You think graphic design and interaction design are just different facets of the same jewel. You can make beautiful, elegant websites as well as engaging interactive controls for data visualization. You have incredible attention to detail.
In addition to your chosen design tools (pencil, Photoshop, etc.), you have a deep understanding of the capabilities of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. If you had to, you could prototype a site using nothing but a text editor.
We’re a startup, so you’ll be hands-on taking care of all the design for the company: branding, visuals, interaction, all the way down to the HTML. You’ll need to communicate well with developers and fit your deliverables into the workflow of a fast-moving website development team. In the fullness of time, you’ll be managing a design team, both full-time and contractors.
You communicate well in written and spoken English (and pictures, of course).
If this sounds interesting, push the button to send us a résumé, cover letter, and portfolio. Please include pointers to websites where we can see your designs and code.
Common factors for all positions
When people ask us where we’re based, we typically respond “on the internet.” That is, although our current offices are in Seattle and San Francisco, we’re looking for talented people wherever they might be based.
- You’re excited to help create not only the architecture of our products, but the culture of the company. You lead by example.
- You don’t need much direction, but when you do, you’re comfortable asking for it.
- You’re willing to dive into just about any problem, even if it’s outside your area of expertise. You cheerfully accept responsibility for whatever needs to get done, but relinquish it when that makes more sense.
- When you attack a task, you stay on it until it’s done. And although you can crank out tons of work, you know when you’ve done enough (not everything has to be perfect — but some things do).
- You can deal with uncertainty and change. During severe course corrections you stay on an even keel. You’re a pleasure to be around when things get tough.
- You keep up to date with the latest developments, but you’re immune to fads and technology/business religion. You just choose the right tools for the job at hand.
