According to research by the GlobalData consultancy, the growth of the healthcare-related applications and mobile devices market will see annual growth of 39%. This increase can be explained, according to the consultant, by the forecasts for growth in and more generalized use of smartphones such as the Iphone and Android phones and devices such as the Blackberry and the Ipad.

All these mobile devices already offer applications that cover a wide range of healthcare topics, such as applications for physical monitoring, nutrition or image diagnosis. The company that issued the report explains that “mHealth includes the use of mobile applications and devices for the remote monitoring of a person’s health status.”

As can be seen from the information made public by GlobalData, the great majority of the mHealth market is made up of software and services, which represent 80% of the whole. The other two sections are hardware, which accounts for 12% of the market and networking and connectivity, which make up the remaining 8%.

Approximately 70% of the healthcare applications currently available are aimed at consumers while the remaining 30% are designed for medical professionals. These latter applications are usually more sophisticated and can give doctors access to patient information or allow them to carry out additional analysis such as 3D anatomical imaging.

The USA is the principal market for mHealth applications, taking up 660 million dollars of the world market in 2011. Europe and the Asia-Pacific region have contributed, according to the same consultancy’s data, 420 and 120 million dollars respectively.
