Entre Rios Makes Progress with its Medication Traceability System

The training day, held at the Paraná Casa de Cultura, was run by technical teams from the National and Provincial Health Ministries.

“Medications are a key element in public health and of course for individual citizens and we must thus ensure that they have access to legitimate medications that fulfill the due process of fabrication, importation, distribution and sale,” said Hugo Cettour, the Minister of Health in Entre Rios.

Pharmacists and workers at pharmacies and laboratories attended the day – which acted as an introduction to the traceability system.

With the objective of gradually implementing the system that ensures the safe sale and consumption of medications, the event placed an emphasis on the process that will monitor the journey of each product – from the moment it is made in the laboratory to when it reaches the patient.

At the Integral Department of Medications in Entre Rios Province, Cristina Collino explained that, until now, traceability was by lot, based on a system developed in the 90s. “Although this format worked fairly well, monitoring was difficult because it left a lot of grey areas,” she said.

Currently, traced medications must have a single code that makes it possible to tell whether the product passed through every stage in the cycle at an authorized location.

According to the official website of the National Administration of Medications, Foods and Medical Technology (ANMAT), the Traceability System established by the Health Ministry should be implemented by every person and company involved in the chain of sale, distribution and provision of medical specialties.

Like other provinces, the implementation of the Traceability System in Entre Rios requires other adaptations established by ANMAT in both the public and private sectors.
