The Catalan Institute of Health (ICS) has developed a solution that can record allergies and adverse reactions to medications.
The new system will make it possible for professionals to include any adverse history related to the consumption of medications in the patient’s electronic health record.
The information gathered will be recorded in a pre-programmed form that, if it detects any possible adverse reaction, will send an automatic notification to the Center of Pharmacovigilance of Catalonia.
“This is a fundamental safety tool that will allow us to significantly reduce adverse reactions,” said Eduardo Diogène Head of the Medication Coordination and Strategy Unit at ICS.
The software is being used at Clinical Primary Care Stations (ECAP) at every ICS center and public healthcare system institutions that possess an ECAP.
According to the Operational Director of ECAP, Rafael Cubí, the system incorporated by ICS is one of the most important steps to have been implemented at the Clinical Primary Care Station.
The IT solution will provide doctors with access to recognized medication databases and an updated bibliography. According to the developers, the Safe Pharmacology Prescription tool will be activated when a medication has been approved at the Clinical Station. In addition, the drug will automatically be checked for compatibility with the patient’s medical history, and the available data in the electronic health record.
“Not many countries in the world have an electronic prescription tool as powerful as that developed by the ICS,” Cubí concluded.
