The hospital network of Mexico City will connect 31 healthcare establishments digitally through the Hospital Medical Administration and Information System (SAMIH).
The initiative, the first of its kind in Latin America, seeks to strengthen the clinical-administrative processes of care units through information technologies. The project will also make it possible for four million patients in the Mexican capital to access their EHR in real time.
To establish communications between local and national systems, the Hospital Administration System will make use of international standards in interoperability. Thus SAMIH will ensure a comprehensive link between the healthcare services at the healthcare institutions that are part of the hospital network in Federal District (DF).
“It will be the first time in the country, and in Latin America, that all the hospitals are connected in real time. This will make service and care more flexible and allow us to transform the hospital without having to start all over again,” said Luis Ángel Vázquez, Director General of Sector Planning and Coordination at the DF Health Department.
The interconnected digital system will also have other functions as it will make it possible to react more scientifically in the face of epidemiological warnings and show how human and economic resources are distributed.
The Federal District Head of Government, Miguel Ángel Mancera, stated that SAMIH is the most ambitious and organized project in Latin America.
According to estimates, the implementation period will take two years and represent a federal investment of 230 million Mexican pesos – plus 270 million for modernizing the technological infrastructure.
The SAMIH Tender
The companies Everis and Telmex have won the tender for the Hospital Medical Administration and Information System in Federal District in Mexico.
With the objective of certifying the single identification number of patients and ensuring the interoperability of SAMIH with the rest of the clinical and administrative applications at the Health Department and other federal bodies, Everis will use the ehCOS suite, which shall be complemented with the tools Oracle Master Patient Index and Oracle Health Sciences Information Manager.
“SAMIH will facilitate the obtainment of the healthcare statistics needed to draw up comprehensive, hyper-efficient public health plans,” said Mario Chao, the Global Director for Healthcare Practice at Everis.
Telmex, meanwhile, will be responsible for providing the cutting edge technological infrastructure that will make it possible to improve processes, ensure change management and optimize the quality of IT services.
“This project, led by the Health Department of Federal District (SEDESA) is a leading one at regional level in the process of transformation of clinical protocols and in the provision of healthcare services in Mexico,” said Isidoro Ambe, Director of the Business Market at Telmex.
For training, the company Slim shall take charge of giving 490,520 hours of classes – in person and on line – to doctors, nurses and administrative staff at the 31 hospitals involved in the project.
