The WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society) is an international event created by the United Nations and coordinated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which was founded in 2003 in order to reduce the digital gap between different countries across the world.
At the World Summit on the Information Society the WSIS 2014 Project awards will be handed out, recognizing public and private entities for their development and implementation of ICTs.
At this edition, as in previous years, the awards will be divided into 18 categories: “Access to information and knowledge,” “e-Health,” “ICT Applications,” “Information and Communication Infrastructure,” and several more.
How are the projects selected?
The nomination process is divided into four stages. The first is the registration of the project in the WSIS database. Next, a group of experts analyzes it, taking into account the subscription and nomination criteria. Once the selection and categorization of each is completed, a web platform is set up so that interested parties can vote on each category. The final stage consists of identifying the 18 winning ideas, which will be announced officially at a ceremony in June.
The projects nominate for the WSIS Prize in the e-health category:
1. The Acuario System (Electronic Health Record for Public Primary Care) a project developed by the government of Salta, Argentina and the Iberoamerican Telemedicine Foundation.
2. Ehalati, a project that centralizes the transfer and approval of transfers of public and private patients within the thirteen largest regions in Saudi Arabia.
3. The OTARR System, a method for ordering and receiving results of toxicology reports online presented by the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia.
4. A low-cost cell-phone with a system focused on monitoring patients developed by the University of the Nile in Egypt.
5. A personalized information system presented by the Social Security Fund of Bulgaria.
