The Catalonian Authority for Data Protection (APDCAT) has awarded its “Data Protection Design” prize to the Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona for its use of the Electronic Health Record at the bedside.
María Ángeles Barbara, the director of APDCAT, said that data protection is an element that helps to win people’s trust so they feel safe with their treatment and understand why these systems are being used.
The President of the Catalonian Parliament, Núria de Gispert, presided over the award ceremony and said in her speech: “Data protection is essential for insuring rights such as dignity and safety.” She added that healthcare is a sensitive issue that requires confidentiality.
What are the tool’s functions?
1. An interactive screen has been installed at the bedside through which one can access the electronic health record.
2. The EHR is constantly updated with the patient’s clinical data such as the results of analyses and diagnostic tests.
3. Restricts access to information as only medical staff can access the data.
