Aiming to provide a more efficient and secure service that can protect personal data, reduce costs and save on archive space, the Federal District Health Department has implemented the Medical and Hospital Information System (SAMIH).
The Head of Government, Miguel Ángel Mancera, stated that 230 million Mexican pesos from the federal budget have been invested in digitalizing the clinical records at hospitals in the Mexico City health network.
SAMIH, which will serve over four million users in the local network, making it possible to store clinical and administrative patient data, images, lab tests, diagnostics and medical treatments. In addition, it meets international standards for health and safety and complies with the applicable regulations in Mexico.
According to Mancera, the system will increase the efficacy and efficiency of the hospital network by 60% and also see improvements in quality, care, opportunity and patient safety.
So far it has been implemented in the five busiest hospitals in the capital: Ajusco Medio, Tacubaya, Inguarán, Enrique Cabrera and Belisario Domínguez.
“When we finish with all 31 hospitals and extend the projects to 220 health centers and 30 specialized clinics, we will have implemented the Electronic Health Record for a population the size of a country,” Mancera said, saying that a project of this size has never been implemented in Latin America.
The Integral Health Solution that SAMIH represents can be used by hospital systems throughout the country as it has support and digital training from Telmex and the ehCOS Electronic Health Record platform and products by Everis.
The partnership developed by both companies seeks to concentrate patients’ electronic health record into a single file to meet the digital evolution requirements requested by the Government of Mexico City.
“I think that now we are at the beginning of a very important process that could be implemented in every state, I think the entire country could have this system and it will then be even more robust. Now we have to measure the results we want, we want the efficacy and efficiency of this system to be measured, we want the benefits to the hospital, the benefits to the health administration, the benefits to users and the benefits to the people all to be measured,” said the Head of Government.
