The A Coruña University Hospita, part of the Xerencia de Xestión Integrada A Coruña, has been working with the Vidal Vademecum Medication Information System for 6 months.
The tool, which can be constantly updated, was implemented because it avoids the typical obsolescence that occurs with paper guides and resources. It also creates added value as it shares information and the solution can be accessed from anywhere in the hospital.
“The Vidal Vademecum Medication Information System is a key reference and therapeutic decision support tool,” said Marta García de Queiruga, a pharmacist at the Pharmacy Service at the La Coruña Hospital.
Advantages for Doctors and Pharmacists
The professionals at the hospital complex can find out what medications are available in real time and this utility has become the greatest benefit provided by the information system. They can also access the Therapeutic Exchange Program and the Medication Identifier.
In clinical units, the medical staff note the utility of the therapeutic equivalents program and the ability to consult complementary documentation associated with certain medications: administration guides, master formula specifications, the action protocols at the center and decisions by the central autonomous commission for pharmacy and therapy.
The Vidal Vademecum tool has facilitated access to pharmaceutical and administrative information about medications and pharmacists at the Hospital de La Coruña praise the ability of the medications database to stay up to date with the pharmaceutical guide.
Improvements in safety, quality and time
“The resource improves access to medication information, mainly for non-pharmaceutical staff, thus reducing the time spent on finding out the availability of medications or ways it can be administered, protocols, etc.” said Marta García de Queiruga.
