«»Doctors are reluctant to issue digital prescriptions due to the slowness of the system,»» says Gonzalo Vecina, the hospital superintendent.
Hospital management is perhaps one of the most complex of logistics and organizational disciplines. A Hospital is the only «»company»» that works seven days a week, 24 hours a day, with a wide range of professional staff – more than 14 different disciplines in the health care area alone – including engineers, managers, and human resources professionals, besides having to reconcile economic interests with the vital necessities of the population.
According to the superintendent of Syrian-Lebanese Hospital, clinical and administrative management is among the main bottlenecks in the sector. Due to the highly complex software, Hospitals have much progress to make, according Vecina; «»There is no demand for efficiency»».
For example, at the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital, physicians are reluctant to fill out electronic prescriptions. For each prescribed drug, the doctor must open a series of windows and fill in various fields. «»It takes about twenty minutes and doctors don’t want to do it. So we hire one person just to scan the prescriptions: the transcriber,»» says Vecina.

Hospital to expand its facilities in Campinas, Sao Paulo
Continuing with its growth strategy, which has the objective of bringing cutting-edge medicine to as many people as possible, on December the 17th, the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital (HSL) will hold the ground breaking ceremony for the cornerstone of its first unit to be located outside São Pablo. The chosen city was Campinas, the Brazilian city with the fifth best urban infrastructure (Simonsen / Exam), and an annual GDP of more than $ 20 billion.
The 58 thousand square meter Syrian-Lebanese Health Complex will provide highly complex treatments which are already running on its main unit in Bela Vista, São Paulo. It will have 150 beds, 30 ICUs, diagnostic centers furnished cutting-edge equipment, a surgical center and an emergency service.
The choice of Campinas also takes into account the fact that the municipality is an important academic and technological hub. 19% of its population has attended higher education Institutes. The city is still the leader in Brazil in the number of patents registered abroad. For this reason, besides the service structure, the HSL will also include the Syrian-Lebanese Institute for Teaching and Research, to establish quality clinical research and healthcare educational partnerships.
This ground-breaking ceremony marks the beginning of the new complex construction in Santa Paula with the development also including the new concept of environmental preservation, designed by L + M Gets. The construction and operation of the new Hospital will follow global standards for sustainability.
The service will commence operations in December 2012, with a monthly capacity of 750 patients, 17000 imaging tests and 80,000 laboratory tests, making it more accessible to people who would otherwise need to travel to São Paulo to use the institution’s services.

A major investment
The new health unit in Campinas is part of the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital’s comprehensive growth strategy. R$600 million were invested in order to expand facilities in Bela Vista, São Paulo, not only nearly doubling the service capacity, but also providing the hospital with new health services.
The HSL also invested R$35 million in another unit in Sao Paulo city, located in Joaquim Floriano, in the Itaim neighborhood, with a 4.3 million square foot building devoted entirely to healthcare.
It is also hoping to establish an advanced unit on Brazil Avenue in São Paulo and a Cancer Center in Brasilia, DF.

Founded in 1921, the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital is maintained by the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital Ladies Benevolent society, a charitable foundation which works in the fields of medicine, social work, education and research.
