The Federación Española de Empresas de Tecnología Sanitaria (Spanish Federation of Healthcare Technology Companies, Fenin) and the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Respiratorias (Center for Network Based Biomedical Research Into Respiratory Diseases, CIBERES) met at CIBERES’ 1st Forum for Exchange and Innovation in the Treatment of Respiratory Diseases, part of the 6th CIBERES Scientific Conference.
The objective of the forum is to encourage the exchange of projects and ideas between researchers and directors of businesses that may help to identify possible common interests and partnerships for the development of solutions aimed at improving the quality of life of patients who need respiratory assistance.
The conclusions drawn from the encounter included the following:
– Therapeutic failure is one of the main reasons treatment fails. The lack of monitoring has serious implications for the health of individuals and a major impact on healthcare spending.
– The use of easy to use telemedicine platforms resolves this problem, allowing patients and doctors to stay connected and comfortable, meeting their health objectives from home. – Diagnostic techniques for respiratory diseases are an expanding area. It is estimated that only 30% of patients with respiratory problems are diagnosed.
– Favoring the development and sale of new techniques and devices aimed at facilitating diagnosis and improving the treatment of respiratory diseases is the objective of the forum organized by Fenin and the CIBER for Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES).
Thanks to continuing advances in the treatment of respiratory diseases – among the 10 main causes of mortality in the world – affected people enjoy greater autonomy and wellbeing to an extent unthinkable a few years ago. “Home respiratory therapies have demonstrated that they are cost-effective but we cannot stop there and deprive society of new solutions both in the diagnostic sector and in the monitoring and treatment of respiratory diseases,” says Lluis Blanch, coordinator of the CIBERES Technology Transfer Platform.
For his part, Ángel Lanuza, coordinator of the Spanish Platform for Innovation in Healthcare Technology, noted the high social, economic and healthcare impact of chronic respiratory diseases such as EPOC or sleep apnea, in our society. “In fact, in the study published in May 2011 by Fenin under the title ‘Efficiency and the benefits of home respiratory therapies’ confirms the healthcare savings of home-based care, as well as the improvement in quality of life and patient satisfaction because they permit better life-styles and avoid unnecessary hospitalizations.”
