Academics Warn Against the Use of Weight-Loss Apps Based on Dubious Science

Generales

There are numerous applications whose weight-loss plans could actually damage the health of the people who follow them. Emily R BretonBernard F Fuemmeler and Lorien C Abroms, authors of the study entitled «»Weight loss—there is an app for that! But does it adhere to evidence-informed practices?«»published in Translational Behavioural Medicine (TBM), identified apps that suggest drinking lemonade all day or just eating apples. There is even one that, possibly humorously, suggests using a mobile phone’s vibration function to burn stomach fat.

Researchers investigated the suitability of apps according to 13 dietary recommendations issued by different American public healthcare bodies. Although the majority of applications studied met at least one of their scientific criteria, only 15% of them contained five or more healthy recommendations.
