Sao Paulo Implements the Electronic Health Record in Single Health System Hospitals

Since August 19th, hospitals and health centers in the State of Sao Paulo have had a Unified Electronic Health Record that makes it possible to access the clinical information of patients in any care unit of the Single Health System (SUS).

The objective of the initiative is to implement an integrated halth record so that doctors don’t have to carry out a clinical evaluation every time a patient goes to hospital. Close to R$ 56 million have been invested in the system that provides these administration tools.

S4SP (Health for Sao Paulo) was developed at the beginning of 2012 by the Secretary of State for Health and Prodesp (Data Processing Company of the State of Sao Paulo) which will be responsible for the security of the clinical information of around 20 million SUS patients.

Eleven hospitals have taken part in the pilot program, which will now be extended to 22 further services – including cities in the interior and on the coast.

The Secretary of State of Sao Paulo expects the system to be functioning in 57 direct administration units and 37 social organization administration units by the end of 2014.
