The Secretary of Health of the Executive Branch of the State of Querétaro, Mario César García Feregrino, presided over an event marking the Technological Update of the State Telehealth Program in Mexico.

The official explained the benefits of the information and communication technologies in improving access to healthcare services and emphasized that remote patients would no longer need to be transferred to large urban centers to be treated.

“These achievements are the result of the efforts of the whole team at the Department of Health, both state and federal. With the update to telemedicine equipment it is possible to carry out early diagnosis and bring healthcare to every corner of the State,” he explained.

The event, which was held at the Teatro Experimental Metropolitano and included a demonstration of how the new equipment would function, was attended by various public figures.

According to Feregrino, the tool will help to reduce the professional isolation of the doctors who provide their services in remote areas, who will also have access to educational content, training and updates via videoconferences.

Juan Manuel Mijares García, the head of the State Telehealth Program, said that the Plan Querétaro 2010-2015 establishes the strategic guidelines to incentivize the development of ICTs in healthcare.

In fact, he said that by May 31, 2014, 2300 consults had been carried out. With the update to the program and equipment the team seeks to increase the number of people benefiting from the service, i.e. to reach more citizens with difficulties accessing specialized medical services.

Finally, he provided a brief summary of the history of the program: in 2010 a Dermatology specialty was opened, in 2011 this was joined by Psychiatry, in June 2012 the Pain and Palliative Care Clinic was added and the following year Integrated Medicine was also included.
