The Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) has designed an application for mobile devices and computers that calculates the risk of developing a cardiovascular disease over a ten year period. The diseases it can predict include heart attack, chest angina and strokes.
He objective of the app, called the Cardiovascular Risk Calculator, is to complement the work of healthcare professionals to estimate how soon a patient will be at risk of contracting a cardiovascular disease. In addition, the mobile tool seeks to help users determine the need to make a medical appointment when the risk is medium or high.
“The Cardiovascular Risk Calculator helps doctors to make a quick estimate of the situation of patients and to work with them to analyze strategies for reducing their probability of developing these diseases,” said Pedro Ordúñez, a Cardiovascular Diseases consultant for WHO/PAHO. “It is also designed to offer suggestions to people seeking to improve and monitor their cardiovascular condition,” he added.
To prevent the development of diseases, the application includes strategies for modifying, improving and monitoring users’ cardiovascular condition, it calculates body mass and issues a series of reminders to avoid interruption of medical treatment. However, it must be born in mind that the app is not a replacement for a medical consult.
The Cardiovascular Risk Calculator is available for free for PCs, iOS and Android. To download it, click here.
