Canada to Finance e-Health and m-Health Projects in Peru

Grand Challenges Canada, a non-profit organization financed by the Canadian government, has announced that it will provide US$100,000 of economic support to Peruvian healthcare projects, including some e-health projects.

The initiatives to receive subsidies, seven in total, will seek to improve the quality of healthcare and will focus on the fight against diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, diabetes, HIV and AIDS.

“These new subsidies strengthen the relationship between Peru and Canada through greater cooperation in science, technology and innovation,” said Gisella Orjeda, President of the National Council of Science, Technology and Technological Innovation (Concytec) of Peru.

The M-Health innovations to be developed in Peru are: a mobile application that monitors the coughing of patients with tuberculosis, an app-foot thermometer for early detection of diabetes through mobile devices and the use of smartphones for carriers or potential carriers of HIV to encourage them to visit healthcare centers and have regular check-ups.

The Canadian government will also finance a low-cost, image-less ultrasound device that can detect cases of pneumonia in remote and/or poor areas.

“We are proud to support these audacious ideas which can have a major impact and save and improve the lives of children, women and men. In addition, these projects strengthen the relationship between Peru and Canada in terms of innovation and global health,” said Peter Singer, CEO of Grand Challenges Canada.
